Greenius™ was conceived with the primary intention of turning the sunglasses market on its head. Currently, almost all of the 100 million injection moulded sunglasses frames sold in the U.S. every year are made from a synthetic polymer called Nylon-12, aka polyamide. Nylon-12 is an amazingly strong plastic with the ability to withstand high-heat and repeated deformation (bending) attempts. What we've been able to achieve with Greenius™ is to meet or exceed the performance properties of Nylon-12 at HALF the price!
You might be asking yourself if Greenius™ bioplastics compete with the production of food or feed. The short answer is no. The land used to grow the renewable feedstock for the production of all bioplastics amounted to approximately 0.01% of the global agriculture area of 5 billion hectares in 2014. This was a key finding published by European Bioplastics based on figures from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and calculations of the Institute of Bioplastics and Biocomposites (IFBB, University Hannover, Germany). A Glance at the global agriculture area and the way it's utilized is abundantly clear: the 0.01% used to grow the feedstock for bioplastics are nowhere near being in competition with the 97% used for pastures, food, feed, bioenergy, biofuels, and other material uses. Thus, there is no competition and minimal land use.
We're currently working on a third-party Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to further validate our environmental claims over Nylon-12.
